Observations and Assessment

What is this about?
One of the ways in which your child is assessed in EYFS is through collecting evidence of things they have said or done. We use an electronic system called 2 Build a Profile. The Early Years team will collect evidence for each child which forms an individual portfolio of observations. Parents will need to have confirmed they would like to receive this and also provide an email address for it to be sent to. Parents should expect to receive their child's learning journal at the end of each half term. 

How Parents can contribute...
We would love to receive parental input in the learning journals – this means we want to know what you can see your child doing at home.

What do I need to do?
If you observe your child doing something ‘noteworthy’, you can simply respond to the email you have received of your child's learning journey.  You can even add attachments if you wish to. Your child's teacher will then accept what has been sent and link it to any relevant objectives which have been achieved. Alternatively, you may jot it down on some paper and give it to a member of the EYFS team. 

These observations at home should be carried out when the child has chosen to carry out that particular task independently by their own choice. The child MUST NOT be asked/suggested/prompted to do something.

Observations can be made from any of the Prime Areas of Learning: Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language and Physical Development, and the Specific Areas of Learning: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.
