Welcome to Year 4's General Class Information page. Here you can find information regarding class trips, P.E. kits, swimming, reading, homework, spellings and times tables amongst other general information that may be of interest.
We go to Roman Chester & the Grovesnor Museum. The children are involved in a 'hands on' workshop, get to go around the museum galleries and go on a Guided Tour of Roman Chester.
We invite an experienced musician and scientist into school for a fun-filled day, on Sound. The children find out about how sound is made, how we hear it and how to make their own musical instruments. Children find out how sound is made and they conduct a series of experiments.
We go to Weaver Hall Museum in Northwich for workshops on the Anglo Saxons and Vikings.
PARENTS - If you are interested in joining us on any of the school trips we normally require more adult supervision, however, these places are allocated on a first come, first served basis and are normally quickly snapped up. (Adults go free)
In Year 4, the children have outdoor PE every Monday and swimming every Tuesday until Easter. After Easter, they have outdoor and indoor PE.
Your child must have the following items in order to do P.E.:
St. Catherine's RC Primary P.E. T-shirt (white/burgundy)
School P.E. Shorts/Plain black/grey jogging bottoms.
Trainers (not pumps)
The children go swimming at Withington Swimming Baths, every Tuesday.
Boys - swimming trunks/shorts (no baggy shorts, they must be skin tight)
Girls - Swimming Costume (not bikinis)
Swimming Caps must be worn, if your child's hair goes over their eyes, when wet. We ask that your child wears a verruca sock, if they suffer from verrucas.
IMPORTANT - Your child must provide a doctor's note for any other equipment needed (i.e. goggles) to prove that there are real issues for their use.
Each night, Year 4 students are expected to read at home. They will come home with two 'take home books' which comes with a guidance bookmark for parents. These consist of comprehension questions to support understanding of the text. They also choose a book from the main library every Friday.
We would appreciate it if you could sign the reading diary every time you listen to your child read.
We ask that children record their daily reading into their reading record each day, recording the book name and page number.
Every Friday, homework is set on Google Classroom and consists of an area of learning in Maths and English that has been taught that week. We ask that children complete their homework in their homework books and then bring them into school each Wednesday to mark through their answers.
Weekly spellings are also set on Google Classroom. Each week, fifteen words will be sent home for your child to learn. All of these words will follow a particular spelling rule. Every Friday, your child will be tested on these words. Three of these words will be tested by dictating a sentence, which will contain one of the learnt words.
Times Tables Rock Stars
Times tables form the basis of a great deal of mathematical learning and therefore it is vital that the children know their times tables and related division facts quickly and off-by-heart. Your child can practice on Times Table Rock Stars using the website or the app. Each child has their own login which they should have recorded in their reading record.
Other resources to support times tables include Hit the Button on Top Marks, a multiplication square and songs, both of which can be found on our Google Classroom page.
