At St Catherine’s, our mission inspires us to help every child recognise their God-given gifts, grow in faith and understanding, and use those gifts to make a positive difference in the world. Through our core values of Love, Respect, Faith, Compassion, Perseverance and Inspiration, we encourage our children to know God, encounter Christ and put their faith into action.
Religious Education at St Catherine’s
At St Catherine’s, we follow the Lighting the Path Religious Education curriculum, which is rooted in the Religious Education Directory (RED) for Catholic schools. Religious Education is a core subject within our curriculum and is taught with the same high expectations, ambition and rigour as other curriculum areas.
Through high-quality teaching, children develop their knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith, engage deeply with Sacred Scripture and learn about the teachings and traditions of the Church. Children are encouraged not only to know and remember more, but also to think deeply, ask questions, make connections and reflect upon how their learning can shape the way they live.
Our teaching of Relationships, Health and Sex Education is supported through the Catholic Life to the Full programme.
Learning is carefully sequenced and makes meaningful connections with the liturgical year and the life of the Church. Scripture is central to our learning, providing opportunities for children to encounter the Word of God and consider its meaning for their own lives.
Across our classrooms and wider school environment, RE learning is celebrated and made visible. Through Scripture, key vocabulary, religious artwork, purposeful displays and opportunities to revisit and retrieve previous learning, we support children to build secure and lasting knowledge as they progress through St Catherine’s.
Ultimately, our Religious Education curriculum seeks to enable every child to grow in knowledge, faith and love, equipping them to live out our mission and “set the world on fire.”
Catholic Social Teaching
Our RE curriculum is enriched through Catholic Social Teaching (CST), helping children to understand that our faith calls us to recognise the dignity of every person, care for creation, serve others and work for the common good. Each half term, the whole school focuses on a Catholic Social Teaching theme, beginning with a dedicated theme day where children explore the principle in an age-appropriate way through Scripture, discussion, prayer and practical activities. Throughout the half term, children are given opportunities to put their faith into action, responding to what they have learnt through service, fundraising, charitable action, caring for our school and local community, looking after our common home and raising awareness of issues that affect others. Through these experiences, we want our pupils to recognise that they can make a difference and grow as missionary disciples, using their God-given gifts to serve others and help to “set the world on fire.”
